About This Guide

This section discusses the objectives, audience, organization and conventions of the Router Installation and Configuration Guide.

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available on a CD-ROM called Cisco Connection Documentation, Enterprise Series. The CD is updated and shipped monthly, so it might be more current than printed documentation. To order the documentation CD, contact your local sales representative or call Customer Service. The CD is available both as a single CD and as an annual subscription. You can also access Cisco technical documentation on the World Wide Web URL http://www.cisco.com.

Document Objectives

This publication guides you through initial site preparation, installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of Cisco 1600 series routers.

Audience

This publication is designed for the person installing Cisco 1600 series routers who should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices and have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician.

This publication is to be used in conjunction with the Cisco IOS Configuration Guide and Cisco IOS Command Reference publications.

Document Organization

The major sections of this publication are as follows:

• Chapter 1, "Overview of the Router," describes the features and specifications of Cisco 1600 series routers.
  

• Chapter 2, "Preparing to Install the Router," describes safety recommendations, site requirements, and required tools and equipment.
  

• Chapter 3, "Installing the Router," describes how to make LAN and WAN network connections.
  

• Chapter 4, "Using WAN Interface Cards," describes the the WAN interface cards and how to install one in Cisco 1600 series routers.
  

• Chapter 5, "Configuring the Software," describes how to configure a Cisco 1600 series router using configuration mode, using AutoInstall, or manually, using the setup facility.
  

• Appendix A, "Troubleshooting," describes various troubleshooting procedures, including how to recover a lost enable password, troubleshooting WAN interface cards and router cables, environmental reporting features, and interpreting the front panel LEDs.
  

• Appendix B, "Configuring the ISDN Line," describes how to order and configure Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN) Basic Rate Interface (BRI) for Cisco 1600 series routers.
  

• Appendix C, "ROM Monitor," describes the ROM monitor (bootstrap program) of the Cisco 1600 series routers.
  

• Appendix D, "Cable Pinouts," contains pinouts for cables used with Cisco 1600 series routers.
  

Document Conventions

This publication uses the following conventions to convey instructions and information:

Command descriptions use these conventions:

• Commands and keywords are in boldface font.
  

• Arguments for which you supply values are in italic font.
  

• Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
  

• Alternative keywords are grouped in braces ({ }) and separated by vertical bars ( | ).
  

Examples use the following conventions:

• Terminal sessions and information the system displays are printed in screen font.
  

• Information you enter is in boldface screen font.
  

• Nonprinting characters, such as passwords, are in angle brackets (< >).
  

• Default responses to system prompts are in square brackets ([ ]).
  

A string is defined as a nonquoted set of characters. For example, when setting up a community string for SNMP to "public" do not use quotation marks around the string or the string will include the quotation marks.
