This front matter section introduces the CiscoWorks NetView Interface Installation and User Guide's audience and scope, organization, use, and conventions.
The CiscoWorks NetView Interface Installation and User Guide steps you through the initial preparation, installation, configuration, and startup of your new software. This manual provides instructions on how to use the alert report mechanism, view device configuration files, execute RUNCMD requests from IBM NetView, and take advantage of the other features of the CiscoWorks product. The CiscoWorks NetView Interface is based on three products, CiscoWorks NetView Interface software, SunConnect's 7.0 SunLink SNA Peer-to-Peer RunTime Environment, and the IBM NetView product.
The CiscoWorks NetView Interface provides basic application operation information, and should be used as a complement to the 7.0 SunLink Peer-to-Peer Administrator's Guide, CiscoWorks User Guide, and the IBM NetView and SNA manuals.
The CiscoWorks NetView Interface Installation and User Guide is directed towards the MVS/VM (mainframe OS) user or IBM Virtual Telecommunications Access Method (VTAM) system administrator familiar with IBM's NetView product. This document also provides information for the IBM system administrator responsible for setting up and managing the NetView product's communication to the CiscoWorks NetView Interface.
Because the CiscoWorks NetView Interface uses UNIX, SNMP, SunNet Manager, SunLink, and CiscoWorks, this manual guides you step-by-step through installation, configuration, and use. We recommend that the Sun installation and configuration portion of this manual be performed by your Sun system administrator.
Users should have prior networking experience and be aware of their own network topology. Experience with UNIX, Sun products, and CiscoWorks is useful but not necessary.
The CiscoWorks NetView Interface documentation is organized to help you use the alert report mechanism, view device configuration files, execute RUNCMD requests, and take advantage of the other features of the CiscoWorks network management product.
The CiscoWorks NetView Interface Installation and User Guide contains the following chapters and appendixes:
- Chapter 1, "Product Overview," provides an overview of the CiscoWorks NetView Interface.
- Chapter 2, "Preparing to Install the CiscoWorks NetView Interface," describes the system requirements for the CiscoWorks NetView Interface and provides a worksheet to gather network information needed during the installation process.
- Chapter 3, "Installing the CiscoWorks NetView Interface," describes the steps to load and install the CiscoWorks NetView Interface. You will need assistance from your Sun system administrator for portions of this chapter.
- Chapter 4, "Configuring the CiscoWorks NetView Interface," describes the steps to configure the CiscoWorks NetView Interface, and describes the IBM and SunLink files necessary for the NMVT alert conversion process and provides a worksheet to gather network information needed during the configuration process. You will need assistance from your Sun system and IBM NetView administrators for portions of this chapter.
- Chapter 5, "Starting and Stopping the CiscoWorks NetView Interface," provides information on how to start and stop the SNA Peer-to-Peer Gateway, the Protocol Conversion Application (PCA), and the RUNCMD Server.
- Chapter 6, "Using the CiscoWorks NetView Interface," describes how to monitor and troubleshoot router activity via alarm conversion using NMVTs. This chapter also provides a description of the RUNCMD process, as well as a brief description of each RUNCMD and examples.
- Appendix A, "Sample Configuration Files," provides sample configuration files for the SNA configuration for the IBM mainframe and the P2P configuration file. It also includes the PCA schema file shipped with the product, as well as event and machine table files containing basic information on trap conversion to an NMVT.
- Appendix B, "Blank Worksheets," contains blank worksheets for you to gather system installation and configuration information.
- Appendix C, "Troubleshooting," describes common CiscoWorks NetView Interface problems and resolutions.
- Appendix D, "Recommended Reading," provides a list of suggested reading materials.
The command descriptions use these conventions:
- Commands and keywords are in boldface.
- Variables for which you supply values are in italics.
- Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
- Alternative but required keywords are grouped in braces ({ }) and are separated by a vertical bar (|). One exception is when describing SunLink command syntax, where angle brackets (<>) are used instead.
The samples use these conventions:
- Terminal sessions are printed in a
screen font

- Information you enter is in a
boldface screen
font.
- Nonprinting characters such as passwords are shown in angle brackets (<>).
- Information the system displays is in
screen
font
, with default responses in square brackets ([ ]).
This publication also uses the following conventions:
- A string is defined as a nonquoted set of characters. For example, when setting up a community string for SNMP to "public", do not use quotes around the string or the string will be set to "public".
- Note: Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this manual.
- Time Saver: Means the described action saves time. You can save time by performing the action described in the paragraph.
- Caution: Means reader be careful. You are capable of doing something that might result in equipment damage or loss of data.
- Warning: Means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and standard practices for preventing accidents.
The 7.0 SunLink SNA Peer-to-Peer Administrator's Guide ships with the CiscoWorks NetView Interface.
