About This Guide
AtmDirector is a network management application for Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. Use this guide to help you discover your ATM network, create soft permanent virtual connections (SPVCs) or soft permanent virtual paths (SPVPs), monitor devices and virtual connections, and manage faults and network performance.

- Chapter One, "Introduction," provides an overview of the AtmDirector features and provides definitions of key concepts.
- Chapter Two, "Starting and Navigating in AtmDirector," defines the window format and provides brief descriptions of menus and options.
- Chapter Three, "ATM Network Discovery Scenarios," shows five different types of ATM networks and how each is discovered.
- Chapter Four, "Quick-Start Tutorial," hypothetical ATM network, setting up a soft PVC or soft PVP, and using the monitoring and management features to troubleshoot and enhance the network.
- Appendix A, "Troubleshooting," describes problems you might encounter while using AtmDirector and provides possible solutions.
- Appendix B, "Directory Structure," shows the default directory structure for the AtmDirector files.
- Appendix C, "AtmDirector Database Management," contains the information you need to configure the AtmDirector database.
Online Help
The online help system for AtmDirector provides an online help manual and context-sensitive help on AtmDirector windows and error messages. Information provided online can help you accomplish the tasks associated with AtmDirector. To access the online help manual, select Help from the Menu bar. To access the context-sensitive help, click the Help button displayed on the window.
Audience
This guide is designed for network managers who are responsible for configuring and maintaining an ATM network. The network manager should be familiar with the following topics:
- Basic concepts and terminology used in ATM internetworking
- Network topology and protocols
- Basic UNIX commands
- Motif or OpenLook windowing system
- CiscoView
Document Conventions

- Command paths in a graphical user interface (GUI) are indicated with angle brackets: File>Load.
- Variables for which you supply values are shown in italics.
- Command options are in brackets ([]) and are separated a bar (|).
- In examples, information the system displays is in

Cisco Connection Online
Cisco Connection Online (CCO), formerly Cisco Information Online (CIO), is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on CCO to obtain additional content and services.
Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and value-added services to Cisco's customers and business partners. CCO services include product information, software updates, release notes, technical tips, the Bug Navigator, configuration notes, brochures, descriptions of service offerings, and download access to public and authorized files.
CCO serves a wide variety of users through two interfaces that are updated and enhanced simultaneously---a character-based version and a multimedia version that resides on the World Wide Web (WWW). The character-based CCO supports Zmodem, Kermit, Xmodem, FTP, and Internet e-mail, and is excellent for quick access to information over lower bandwidths. The WWW version of CCO provides richly formatted documents with photographs, figures, graphics, and video, as well as hyperlinks to related information.
