About This Guide

This section describes the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the CiscoWorks Administration and Installation Guide on NetView for AIX. It also lists related Cisco, Sybase, and IBM publications.

Document Objectives

This guide contains procedures for planning, installing, and configuring the CiscoWorks network management software; setting up the CiscoWorks environment for your system; and preparing to use CiscoWorks. It also includes information on using CiscoWorks on the NetView for AIX platform and troubleshooting guidelines.

For detailed information on using the CiscoWorks applications, refer to the CiscoWorks User Guide and the CiscoWorks Release Note.

Audience

The CiscoWorks Administration and Installation Guide on NetView for AIX is designed for the Cisco Systems user responsible for installing, configuring, and verifying CiscoWorks software. This includes network managers, operators, and system administrators who should have prior networking experience, be familiar with the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), be aware of their own network topology, and be familiar with at least one window manager (for example, OSF/Motif) and the basic network management tools of NetView for AIX. Familiarity with database programs, a UNIX text editor (vi, for example), and the basic commands used in the UNIX environment (for example, the cd command used to change directories) is helpful.

Document Organization

The organization of this guide reflects the order in which the tasks should be performed.

Following are the major sections of this guide:

• Chapter 1, "Product Overview," provides an overview of the CiscoWorks applications and an overview of the installation tasks.
  

• Chapter 2, "Preparing to Install CiscoWorks," describes the system requirements for CiscoWorks and information you should gather before installing and configuring the CiscoWorks software.
  

• Chapter 3, "Installing and Configuring CiscoWorks," provides procedures for installing and configuring CiscoWorks.
  

• Chapter 4, "Validating CiscoWorks Installation," explains how to edit the .cshrc file to include CiscoWorks-related information, start NetView for AIX, and view CiscoWorks processes.
  

• Appendix A, "Error Messages," provides error messages encountered during installation and configuration. It explains the context of the error message and provides solutions.
  

Document Conventions

The command descriptions use the following conventions:

• Commands and keywords are in boldface font.
  

• Variables for which you supply values are in italic font.
  

• Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
  

• Alternative but required keywords are grouped in braces ({ }) and are separated by vertical bars (|).
  

The examples use these conventions:

• Terminal sessions and information the system displays are in screen font.
  

• Information you enter is in boldface screen font.
  

• Nonprinting characters, such as passwords, are in angle brackets (< >).
  

• Information the system displays is in screen font, with default responses in square brackets ([ ]).
  

This publication also uses the following conventions:

• Menu and button items are in boldface.
  

• Selecting menu items is indicated by the following convention: Select Administer>CiscoWorks System>Process Mgr.
  

• Directories and filenames are in italics.
  

If items such as buttons or menu options are grayed out on application windows, you might not have permission to use these options, or the options are not available given the choices you have made.

This publication includes examples that are based on the C shell. If you are using a different shell, make the appropriate changes necessary to reflect your environment. For more information about UNIX shells, refer to your IBM documentation.
