This section discusses the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the Cisco 1020 User Guide.
All Cisco technical documentation and selected marketing material are available on Cisco Connection Documentation CD-ROM, the online library of Cisco product information. Cisco Connection Documentation CD-ROM is updated and shipped monthly, so it may be more up to date than printed documentation. Cisco Connection Documentation CD-ROM is available both as a single CD and as an annual subscription. This publication contains the initial site preparation, installation, troubleshooting, and selected upgrade, maintenance, and configuration procedures.
For further software configuration and command information, refer to the Cisco 1020 Command Reference manual. The Cisco 1020 Command Reference manual is available on Cisco Connection Documentation CD-ROM or a printed copy can be ordered separately.
This publication is for the router installer, who is familiar with telecommunications and data communications wiring practices. Users of this publication include network administrators and anyone interested in setting up and maintaining the Cisco 1020.
Following are the chapters and appendixes included in this publication:
Chapter 1, "Cisco 1020 Overview," contains an overview of the Cisco 1020 features and physical specifications.
Chapter 2, "Preparing for Installation," includes safety recommendations, tools and equipment, site requirements, an installation checklist, console and external modem port cable conditions, network connection considerations, and instructions for inspecting the new system.
Chapter 3, "Installing the Cisco 1020," provides instructions for wall-mounting, desktop operation, procedures for making external connections, and information about what to do after installing the hardware.
Chapter 4, "Configuring the Cisco 1020," presents configuration information for six common uses of the Cisco 1020, as well as sections on passwords, connecting to the Cisco 2509/2511, and testing.
Appendix A, "Cabling Specifications," provides cable and interface pinouts for all of the connections on the Cisco 1020.
Appendix B, "Updating Software," describes the procedures required to download software upgrades to the Cisco 1020 from a TFTP server.
Appendix C, "Command Reference," provides alphabetical lists of all Cisco 1020 commands, by type. More detailed command information is provided in the separate Cisco 1020 Command Reference.
Appendix D, "Supported Protocols and MIBs," lists the internetworking protocols and Management Information Bases (MIBs) supported by the Cisco 1020.
Appendix E, "Modems," provides a listing of verified and certified modems.
Appendix F, "Regulatory Compliance," outlines United Kingdom and European Community regulations pertaining to the Cisco 1020.
