Port Adapters and Service Adapters for the Cisco 7000 Family

Product Overview

The Cisco 7500 series and Cisco 7200 series routers support ATM, 100VG-AnyLAN, Ethernet 10BaseT and 10BaseFL, Fast Ethernet 100BaseTX and 100BaseFX, Token Ring, Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), High-Speed Serial Interface (HSSI), and synchronous serial media. These interfaces are contained on modular port adapters and service adapters for the Cisco 7200 series and for the Second-Generation Versatile Interface Processor (VIP2). The VIP2 can be used in Cisco 7500 series routers and in Cisco 7000 series routers using the 7000 Series Route Switch Processor (RSP7000) and 7000 Series Chassis Interface (RSP7000CI). The port adapters and service adapters connect Cisco's high-speed bus (or buses) to external networks.

The Cisco 7200 series routers support multiprotocol, multimedia routing and bridging with a wide variety of protocols and any combination of ATM, ATM-Circuit Emulation Services (ATM-CES), Ethernet 10BaseT and 10BaseFL, Fast Ethernet 100BaseTX and 100BaseFX, Token Ring, FDDI, HSSI, ISDN PRI and BRI, and synchronous serial media. Network interfaces reside on port and service adapters that provide a connection between the routers' Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) buses and external networks. Port and service adapters can be placed in any available port adapter slot, in any desired combination.

LAN Port Adapters

Ethernet 10BaseT

The Ethernet 10BaseT port adapters provide IEEE 802.3 Ethernet 10BaseT interfaces. Each interface allows a maximum bandwidth of 10 Mbps, for a maximum aggregate bandwidth of 40 Mbps. All ports run at line (wire) speed. The Ethernet 10BaseT port adapters are available for Cisco 7500 series, Cisco 7000 series, and Cisco 7200 series routers.

Two models of the Ethernet 10BaseT port adapter are available:

PA-CT3/4T1 Channelized DS3 Port Adapter for the Cisco 7200

The PA-CT3/4T1 for the Cisco 7200 family routers supports 28 separate T1 serial interfaces on a single DS3 interface, extending high density and cost effective T1 leased line aggregation to the 7200 platform. Functionality of the PA-CT3/41 port adapter is identical to the CT3IP-xx series channelized DS3 interface processors. The PA-CT3/4T1 meets a price/performance ratio ideal for T1 aggregation in regional ISP and enterprise data center applications.

ATM Interfaces

ATM PA

The ATM Port Adapters are single-port (SC duplex connectors), OC-3c/STM1 (155 Mbps) ATM port adapters for the Cisco 7500 series, Cisco 7000 series, and Cisco 7200 series routers. The ATM Port Adapters are intended for campus, private network, and intra-POP ATM applications with fiber cable lengths up to 2 km (multimode) or 15 km (singlemode).

ATM CES PA

The ATM Circuit Emulation Services Port Adapters (ATM CES PA) are dual-wide port adapters with four T1 (1.54 Mbps) or four E1 (2.048 Mbps) CES interfaces, and a single OC-3 (155 Mbps) single-mode intermediate reach or a T3 (45 Mbps) or E3 (34 Mbps) standards-based ATM interface for the Cisco 7200 series routers. The CES interfaces can support both structured (Nx64 kbps) and unstructured T1 or E1circuits. The ATM CES PAs are ATM access concentrators on a card and provide aggregation of packet (data) and circuit (voice and video) traffic onto a single ATM WAN link. Cisco IOS Release 11.1(14)CA is required for the ATM CES PA.

Service Adapters

Compression Service Adapters

The compression service adapters provide high-performance, hardware-based data compression capabilities. These service adapters off-load all compression- and decompression-related packet handling from host processors. To accomplish this, the compression service adapters compress and decompress packets passing through synchronous serial port adapters configured for a peak line rate of 16 Mbps or lower. The compression service adapters are available for Cisco 7500 series, Cisco 7000 series (equipped with the RSP7000), and Cisco 7200 series routers.

Two models of the compression service adapter are available:

Note There is one compression context for each PPP link and one compression context for each virtual circuit in a Frame Relay link.

Figure 7-60 shows the compression port adapter with a 786-KB configuration and 64 WAN links, and Figure 7-61 shows the compression port adapter with 3-MB compression and 256 WAN links.

Figure 7-60: Compression Service Adapter (786-KB Configuration,

Note
Table 7-47 in the "Interface Processors for the Cisco 7000 Family" chapter outlines the minimum VIP2 hardware configurations for port adapters supported by the VIP2 architecture. Use this table to determine which VIP2 model supports the port adapter that you want to use.

Encryption Service Adapters

The encryption service adapter (ESA) provides high-performance, hardware-based data encryption capabilities. This service adapter off-loads all encryption-related packet handling from host processors. The ESA operates with most port adapters on Cisco 7500 systems including 4E, 8E, 5EFL, 4R, FDDI, FDDI FDX, 100VG, 4T+, 8T, HSSI, and CT1/CE1 (does not support PRI) and supports PPP, Frame Relay, and HDLC WAN encapsulations. The ESA supports all port adapters and WAN encapsulations on the Cisco 7200.
