Introducing a New Cisco Product:
Cisco 12000 Series Gigabit Switch Router

Product Overview

The Cisco 12000 series is the newest addition to the company's next generation of Internet routing products and is the premier platform for

Routers in the Cisco 12000 series are targeted at scaling Internet and enterprise backbones to speeds of 2.4 Gbps (OC-48) and beyond. The Cisco 12000 series provides the following features:

The GSR series includes three models: the Cisco 12004, 12008, and 12012.

The Cisco 12012 provides 12 slots and supports core network sites, where OC-3/STM-1 and OC-12/STM-4 interfaces are required, and the highest possible port density is necessary.

Cisco 12000 Series

Routers in the Cisco 12000 series complement Cisco's existing Internet routers, specifically those in the Cisco 7500 series. (Cisco 7500 series routers are optimized to handle backbones built around DS-3/E-3 (45/34 Mbps) and OC-3/SONET/SDH (155 Mbps) facilities.) They also complement Cisco's ATM product line by offering an OC-12 ATM interface that enables Cisco 12000 series to be interconnected across an ATM network.

Key Features and Benefits

Table 7-1 lists the features and benefits available with the Cisco 12000 series routers.

Table 7-1: Cisco 12000 Series Features and Benefits
Feature Benefits
Scalable performance

Wide range in switching capacity
(from 5 to 60 Gbps)

Enables customers to dramatically expand backbone capacity within a single product family, avoiding the expensive tear-outs often needed for products not able to scale beyond OC-12/STM-4 rates.
Scalable network services QoS/CoS mechanisms enable traffic engineering to increase network utilization and provide the basis for offering differential class of service models and a more profitable operating environment.
Carrier class availability:

  • Redundant switch fabric

  • Line card redundancy

  • Dual GRP

  • Online software configuration

Ensures maximum uptime and minimum disruption of user traffic.

Integration with SONET/SDH transport network Enables SONET/SDH resiliency capabilities to be extended to the Cisco 12000.
Cisco IOS software Delivers scalable and service-rich software, providing high-performance Layer 3 queuing and traffic engineering capabilities to support IP QoS offerings.

Specifications

Standard Features

The Cisco 12000 series has the following standard features:

Configuration Guidelines

This section provides helpful information for planning your Cisco 12000 and chassis configuration. The Cisco 12012 supports 12 slots and the Cisco 12008 supports 8 slots. Either one or two of the slots are used for gigabit route processors, depending upon whether redundancy is required. In the Cisco 12012, 11 slots are available for a variety of fully hot-swappable line cards. Seven such slots are available in the Cisco 12008, and three in the Cisco 12004.

Cisco 12000 Series chassis slots are universal and can be populated with any combination of GRPs and line cards. Table 7-2 shows one possible configuration.

At the heart of the GSR is a multigigabit crossbar switching fabric that provides synchronized gigabit-speed interconnections for all of the other cards in the system. The switching fabric for the Cisco 12012 and 12008 consists of up to four switching cards, supplemented by a fifth card that provides 1:4 or 1:1 redundancy. The Cisco 12004 uses one 4-port switch card rather than the switching fabric used by the Cisco 12008 and 12012. The switching cards for the Cisco 12008 and 12012 are not interchangeable. Table 7-3 shows the valid configuration for the switching fabric.

The switch fabric for the 12012 and 12008 consists of two different type of assemblies: the Clock/Scheduler Controller (CSC) and the Switch Fabric (SFC). As the name implies, the CSC contains the switch fabric, but also includes the system clock and fabric scheduler. The SFC contains the switch fabric only. The 12004 fabric consists of a CSC assembly only, while GRPs and line cards are interchangeable across all Cisco 12000 models. The CSC and SFC assemblies are unique to each chassis type and are therefore, not interchangeable.

Redundancy in all key system components (processors, switch fabric, line cards, cooling, and power) minimizes possible network disruption if a failure occurs. Table 7-4 shows the valid redundancy options for each GSR product.

Software

The system software is based on IOS Version 11.2, but it has been optimized to support IP only. A software license is required for each Cisco 12000 series system. The license must accompany each system and chassis purchase, and is tied to the Cisco 12000 chassis serial number. If you are ordering only GSR spares, you need not order a software license.

Line Card and GRP Memory Options

There are 2 configurable memory types on the GRP; Flash (PCMCIA) and DRAM used to hold system software, routing table, etc. Default GRP memory is 20 MB PCMCIA flash, and 64MB DRAM, expandable to 256MB.

There are 2 configurable memory types on each of the Cisco 12000 line cards; packet memory (buffers) and route table memory. Default route table memory is 32 MB and is expandable to 256 MB. Default packet memory can be expanded to 128MB (64 MB Tx, 64 MB Rx).

Ordering Process

Use the following steps to make up your order for a router in the GSR series:

  1. Select the base system. GSR12/15 for the 15 Gbps Cisco 12012, and GSR8/10 for the 10 Gbps Cisco 12008.

  2. Add the following to the order:

    • Base system software license

    • Type of power supply (AC/DC) [DC power is the default]

    • Proper power cord (AC only)

    • Increased GRP memory (if necessary)

  3. Add the required line card and increase the line card's packet buffer and DRAM memory, if necessary.

  4. Add redundant components:

    • Switch cards (see Table 7-3)

    • GRP (two maximum)

    Power supplies (see Table 7-6)

Services and Support

There no special support or service requirements for the GSR series. You can obtain technical support from the Technical Assistance Center (TAC), and SmartNet contracts are available.
