VlanDirector 1.0 Release Notes
Enclosed is a CD containing VlanDirector release 1.0, Cisco's VLAN configuration and management tool for switched internetworks. Also enclosed is the VlanDirector Getting Started Guide and the CD booklet, which includes installation instructions. The CD includes an online help system that provides information on product features and how to use them.
These release notes provide information that is not included in the documentation on the following topics:
- Starting VlanDirector from HP OpenView
- Known Problems
- Troubleshooting Procedures
To start VlanDirector from HP OpenView, do the following:
- Step 1 Restart HP OpenView by entering the following commands at the UNIX system prompt, replacing <install directory> with the name of the root of the installation tree. For example, /usr/vlan is the default root.
source <install directory>/etc/install.cshrc
ovw
- Step 2 From the HP OpenView main window (topology map), select a switch icon to be used as the seed discovery device.
- Step 3 From the HP OpenView main window (topology map), select Monitor > VlanDirector.
You may encounter the following problems when using VlanDirector:
Symptom The following error message appears:
Error: Drag & Drop unknown device
Possible Cause This error can occur in one of the following situations:
- During the discovery process
- If you select Save As before the initial discovery has been completed
Recommended Action Perform the following steps:
- Step 1 Wait until the discovery process has been completed (the magnifying glass stops moving).
- Step 2 Reopen the known network you started from, let its discovery complete, then select Save As and specify the configuration that caused the error.
Symptom Undoing a port deletion does not open the Link Selection dialog window.
Possible Cause Undoing a port deletion does not have exactly the same effect as adding a port. Specifically, when moving a new VLAN to a switch, VlanDirector does not display the link selection dialog window.
Recommended Action Do one of the following:
- Manually move the desired links.
- Delete the port again and then add the port in the normal way.
Symptom If you do not specify a Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) device when you install VlanDirector or when you start VlanDirector from the command line, the application terminates.
Recommended Action Specify a CDP device when installing VlanDirector or when starting it from the command line as described in the documentation.
Symptom When you launch CiscoView from VlanDirector, user ports are highlighted correctly according to the VlanDirector legend window. Link ports are not highlighted in any color.
Symptom When you attempt to launch VlanDirector from HP OpenView, the following error message is displayed:
No startup discovery device specified.
Recommended Action Select an icon for a switch that can be used as the seed switch for discovery. Then launch VlanDirector.
Link ports do not appear in the VLAN Ports window.
You can drag a link to the VLAN Ports window in order to include that link in a VLAN, but the ports terminating that link do not appear in the VLAN Ports window.
Use the following troubleshooting information to help you resolve problems that may occur when running VlanDirector:
Symptom Nothing is displayed in the Network Topology window, or the topology is incorrect.
Recommended Action Perform the steps in the Network Verification section of the VlanDirector Getting Started Guide.
Symptom CiscoView fails to launch.
Possible Cause Insufficient system resources, for example, insufficient swap space or free processes, were available to start a new process.
CiscoView is hidden under a window on your screen.
Recommended Action Do one of the following:
- Look in the shell window from which you launched VlanDirector for a system error such as "Fork failed," indicating a lack of system resources needed to launch a new process.
Try again, or record the shell window message and contact your system administrator.
- Iconize all open windows.
Symptom You get an error message when attempting to save a customization.
Recommended Action Start VlanDirector from a shell window, using the current working directory for which the user has read/write access.
Symptom The Network Topology window displays the IP address of a switch but fails to display its icon.
Possible Cause The switch is unmanageable from VLAN 1 (the default VLAN).
Recommended Action Perform the steps in the Network Verification section of these release notes.
Symptom The VlanDirector path selection window does not always display all paths.
Possible Cause The VlanDirector path selection window is not updated after it has been opened.
Recommended Action Close it after each use.
