About This Guide
VlanDirector is a virtual LAN-management application for Cisco Catalyst switches. It enables you to configure and modify virtual LANs (VLANs). VlanDirector, which is GUI-based, provides multiple windows for displaying configuration status, and provides both physical and logical views of interconnected Catalyst switches. This guide provides information on the following topics:
- An overview of VLANs and VlanDirector
- System and network requirements
- Installing and removing VlanDirector
- Launching and getting started with VlanDirector
- Performing basic VLAN configuration tasks
For additional and detailed task-oriented information on performing management and configuration tasks using VlanDirector, use the context-sensitive online help system that is included with the product.
This guide is designed for network managers who are responsible for the initial setup and configuration of VLANs using VlanDirector. The network manager should be familiar with the following topics:
- Basic concepts and terminology used in internetworking
- Network topology and protocols
- Basic UNIX commands
- Motif or OpenWindows windowing system
- CiscoView
This guide uses basic conventions to represent text and table information.
Command descriptions use these conventions:
- Commands and keywords are in boldface font.
- Variables for which you supply values are shown in angle brackets (< >).
- Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
- Alternative but required keywords are grouped in bracefds ({ }) and are separated by a vertical bar (|).
Examples use these conventions:
- Terminal sessions and information the system displays are printed in a

- Variables and nonprinting characters, such as passwords, are shown in angle brackets (< >).
