CiscoWorks NetView Interface 1.0(1) Release Note

This release note describes the features, manual errata notes, and caveats for CiscoWorks NetView Interface, Release 1.0(1).

Note: Cisco Systems uses an internal reporting system for tracking modifications and caveats. For your reference, identification numbers follow the description of the caveat or modification. If you need to contact Customer Service about one of the following caveats or modifications, reference the identification number to speed up the resolution of any questions or situations you may encounter.

Release 1.0 Features

The CiscoWorks NetView Interface provides a NetView operator with two-way communication between the CiscoWorks network management software and the IBM NetView software. The software uses the following functionality:

Traps conversion for IBM NetView---Allows you to manage your Cisco routers by converting SNMP traps and events into SNA alerts and sending them to NetView in NMVT message unit. CiscoWorks NetView Interface uses an event table to provide instructions on trap-to-alert conversions.
RUNCMD Server---Allows NetView operators to retrieve information from Cisco devices by using commands. The RUNCMD interface is open-ended. You can also customize your own commands and add them into your path. The RUNCMD Server uses CiscoWorks applications along with information from Sybase tables and SNM commands to provide device information to the IBM NetView users.
Protocol Conversion Application (PCA)---A table-driven program that you use to configure which SNM network events are of interest to SNA network management and what specific variables to include in the SNA alert.

You can access the following CiscoWorks applications through the RUNCMD utility:

Documentation on CD-ROM

The CiscoWorks NetView Interface Installation and User Guide is available on the CD-ROM in PostScript and FrameViewer formats. A README file is located in the /documentation directory.

You have two options for using the document files on the CD-ROM:

Mount the CD-ROM and use the files off the disc.
Mount the CD-ROM and copy the files you want to access to your local hard drive.

Instructions for mounting the CD-ROM are in the CiscoWorks NetView Interface Installation and User Guide or in the CD-ROM installation booklet shipped with the disc.

To copy the documentation files to your hard disk, perform the following steps:

Step 1: If the CD-ROM is not already mounted, refer to the CD-ROM installation booklet for instructions on mounting the disc.

Step 2: Create a directory to store the CD-ROM files by entering the following:

% mkdir /docs

Step 3: Change to the new /docs directory by entering the following:

% cd /docs

Step 4: To copy all the document files to your /docs directory, enter the following:

% cp /cdrom/documentation/Viewer_docs/UserGuide/*.* .

Step 5: To copy a specific document file to your /docs directory, enter the following:

% cp /cdrom/documentation/Viewer_docs/UserGuide/filename.view .

Substitute the name of your file for filename.view.

For additional information on accessing the documents on CD-ROM, refer to the README file in the /documentation directory.

Caution: Avoid exposing the CiscoWorks CD-ROM to direct sunlight as this might harm the contents.

Manual Errata Notes

The following information corrects inaccurate information found in the CiscoWorks NetView Interface Installation and User Guide.

Chapter 4

The following sections in Chapter 4 contain typographical errors. Use the following sections instead of the manual.

Configuring CiscoWorks Owner and Group IDs

In the section on "Configuring CiscoWorks Owner and Group IDs," the instructions to run the CWNVconfigure script are incorrect. Step 1 should read:

Step 1: At the command prompt, enter the following commands:

hostname% cd /usr/tmp/unbundled        
hostname% CWNVconfigure

Configuring the SNA Peer-to-Peer Configuration File

In the section on "Configuring the SNA Peer-to-Peer Configuration File," the instructions to configure your p2pconf input file are incorrect. Step 1 should read:

Step 1: Change to the directory where the sample files are stored. The files are located in the /snap2p/p2p_etc directory:

hostname% cd /usr/sunlink/snap2p/p2p_etc

Modifying the SNA Peer-to-Peer Configuration Input File

The section on "DEFINE_Node" states that the node_id variable corresponds to the IBM SSCPNAME. The node_id actually corresponds to the IBM CPNAME.

Chapter 5

The following section in Chapter 5 contains an error. Use the following section instead of the manual.

Starting the RUNCMD Server

In the section on "Starting the RUNCMD Server," the instructions to start the RUNCMD Server are incorrect. Step 2 should read:

Step 2: Enter the following command at the UNIX prompt:

hostname% /usr/sunlink/snap2p/p2p_etc/runcmd         gateway_name &

Chapter 6

The sample show_if_ids RUNCMD file is available on Cisco Systems CiscoWorks FTP public area. This file displays the ifIndex for each interface. You can substitute any SQL queries to create different customized commands. The show_if_ids file is located in the CiscoWorks/sql directory. For instructions on obtaining this file using FTP, refer to "Obtaining Additional Information" in the CiscoWorks NetView Interface Installation and User Guide.

Release 1.0(1) Caveats

This section lists notes and restrictions that apply to the CiscoWorks NetView Interface, Release 1.0(1). These caveats are arranged by topic. Within each topic, subtopics are organized alphabetically.

Device Monitor Daemon or Automatic Node Management Traps

Traps created by the Device Monitor daemon (devmond) and Auto Mgmt (of SunNet Manager) do not fall in the defined SNMP trap types. So, even if CiscoWorks or SNM is creating traps, PCA cannot map these entries to their defined six SNMP traps. PCA uses the default mapping entry in its event file for mapping these type of traps. This default entry appears on the NPDA dynamic alert screen as "Operator notification." [CSCdi08611] [CSCdi08613]

PATH Statement

The PATH statement in your .cshrc file must be updated to reflect additional SunLink directories. Refer to the CiscoWorks NetView Interface Installation and User Guide for more information.

PCA Schema Files

The current PCA schema file shipped with the SunLink product contains errors. A copy of an updated PCA schema that includes the necessary support information has been added to the CiscoWorks NetView Interface software. Refer to the CiscoWorks NetView Interface Installation and User Guide for more information.

Sun SNMP Daemon

Because of a bug in the Sun SNMP daemon (snmpd), a "Device Monitor: llc7 subnetmask changed" message might be forwarded to NPDA from the CiscoWorks NetView Interface. The llc7 is a pseudo-device created by the SNA Peer-to-Peer installation that appears as an interface. This message is created if the Device Monitor is monitoring the Sun workstation where CiscoWorks NetView Interface is installed. The snmpd process creates a different subnetmask as a response to an SNMP query.

This bug has been reported to Sun. Currently there is no bug ID associated with this problem, but Sun is looking into the problem. To avoid these messages, change the monitoring options on the CiscoWorks NetView Interface workstation so the monitoring interfaces option is not selected. Remember to use Activate Changes from the Options menu after changing your options.
