Network Management System Requirements

Network Management System Requirements

Network Management System Requirements

To manage a network of LightStream 2020 multiservice ATM switches (LS2020 switches), you must run the StreamView network management software on a network management system (NMS). The NMS must be a member of the Sun SPARCstation family of workstations. This combination of software and hardware provides the means for configuring, monitoring, and controlling LS2020 switches throughout your network.

Note You can run StreamView on the NMS either with or without HP OpenView. However, some StreamView modules, such as the topology map (which generates a graphical representation of your network), require HP OpenView.

NMS Hardware Requirements

The NMS hardware requirements are listed below:

Note If you are not running HP OpenView, 24 MB of memory may suffice.

Note You will need additional disk space to accommodate Motif, X Windows, HP OpenView, or any other software that you choose to install on the NMS hard disk.

  • An Ethernet port.

  • A quarter-inch tape drive for installing StreamView software from tape.

  • A color monitor to run the CiscoView 2020 monitor and the topology map module.

NMS Software Requirements

The StreamView network management application, including its CiscoView 2020 monitor module, must be installed and configured on the hard disk of the Sun SPARCstation that you use as the NMS. These and other software requirements are outlined below:

  • StreamView requires a Sun SPARCstation running SunOS 4.1.3 or 4.1.4 (the latter requires SunOS patch 102264-02). StreamView does not operate under Solaris Version 2.0 or later.

Note The operating system required for network management functions is not the default software currently being shipped with new Sun SPARCstations. To use StreamView on the NMS, you must specifically ask for the SunOS 4.1.x/Solaris 1.1.x operating system to be installed on the NMS hard disk.

  • The CiscoView 2020 monitor requires a Sun SPARCstation 5 (or greater) running SunOS 4.1.x, with 64 MB of RAM and 90 MB of swap space. For more information, see the CiscoView documentation.

Note If you run the CiscoView 2020 monitor on a UNIX operating system, you must use a Sun SPARCstation model 5 or higher as the NMS. You cannot use the CiscoView 2020 monitor on a Sun SPARCstation model IPC.

  • X Window System X11R5

  • Motif 1.2 window manager

In addition, you have the option of running HP OpenView on the NMS in conjunction with StreamView, in which case, the following HP version information applies:

  • HP OpenView Version 3.3

  • HP OVIC Version 1.4 or later (the HP OpenView installation utilities file set)

If you intend to use the StreamView topology map module, HP OpenView is required.

For more information about HP OpenView operating requirements, see the HP OpenView Management Platform Performance and Configuration Guide.
