Document Conventions

About This Manual

This manual has been written for the network manager interested in managing
FastHub 116T+ and FastHub 116C+ repeaters; hereafter both are referred to as the FastHub when discussing features common to both. Management of the FastHub stack is accomplished using a standard SNMP-based network-management application. This manual describes the standard MIB objects and MIB object extensions supported by the FastHub and how to configure your FastHub for in-band management. It is assumed that readers of this manual are well-versed in the concepts and terminology of SNMP.

This publication contains the following information:

Chapter 1, "Overview," lists supported TCP/IP protocols and provides procedures to upgrade the network management module (NMM) firmware. It also lists the supported MIB objects, their functions, and the traps generated by the FastHub.
Chapter 2, "Enterprise-Specific MIB," describes how to configure an enterprise-specific MIB to allow users access to the unique features and other management functions described in this chapter.
Chapter 3, "Repeater MIB," describes the repeater MIB groups and MIB group objects.
Chapter 4, "Remote Monitoring MIB," describes the remote monitoring MIB groups and MIB group objects.
Chapter 5, "Cisco Discovery Protocol MIB," describes the Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) MIB, a protocol for discovering devices on a network. It includes descriptions of the CDP MIB groups and MIB group objects.
Chapter 6, "RS-232 MIB," describes how to use the supported MIB objects to configure the RS-232 serial port (console port).

Note EIA/TIA-232 was known as the recommended standard RS-232 before its acceptance as a standard by the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) and Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). Because RS-232 appears in the names of supported MIB objects, this manual also uses RS-232.

Document Conventions

This publication uses the following conventions to convey instructions and information:

Command descriptions use these conventions:

Commands and keywords are in boldface font.
Arguments for which you supply values are in italics.
Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
Alternative or optional keywords are in bold, grouped in square brackets ([ ]), and separated by a vertical bar ( | ).
Required keywords are grouped in angle brackets (< >) and separated by a vertical bar ( | ).

Examples use these conventions:

Terminal sessions and system displays are in screen font.
Information you enter is in boldface screen font.

Notes, cautions, and warnings use the following conventions and symbols:

Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this manual.

Caution Means reader be careful. In this situation, you might do something that could result in equipment damage or loss of data.

Warning Means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, you must be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and familiar with standard practices for preventing accidents.
