Technical Assistance

Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time online support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on Cisco Connection Online to obtain additional content and services.

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and valueadded services to Cisco's customers and business partners. CCO services include product information, release notes, technical tips, the Bug Navigator, configuration notes, brochures, descriptions of service offerings, and download access to public and authorized files.

CCO serves a wide variety of users through two interfaces that are updated and enhanced simultaneously---a character-based version and a multimedia version that resides on the World Wide Web (WWW). The character-based CCO supports Zmodem, Kermit, Xmodem, FTP, and Internet e-mail options, and is excellent for quick access to information over lower bandwidths. The WWW version of CCO provides richly formatted documents with photographs, figures, graphics, and video, as well as hyperlinks to related information.

You can access CCO in the following ways:

For a copy of CCO's Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), contact ccohelp@cisco.com. For additional information, contact ccoteam@cisco.com.

Installing and Configuring Your Cisco IOS Software

The structure of the Cisco IOS software documentation was revised for Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1. The router products and access server documentation were combined into a set of six modules to make the documentation more usable. The revised documentation is referred to as the "Cisco IOS configuration guides" and the "Cisco IOS command references" in this section.

Main Documentation

Describe system configuration and maintenance tasks and provide comprehensive configuration examples. The configuration guides do not include command syntax for every command, so you should use them in conjunction with the command references. The Cisco IOS configuration guides are intended for network administrators who need in-depth descriptions of configuration tasks.

Describe the commands necessary for configuring and maintaining your system. The Cisco IOS command references are intended either as standalone manuals for experienced network administrators who need to reference commands or as companions to the configuration guides.

Supporting Documentation

Describes the Cisco Systems private, or local, Management Information Base (MIB), which is provided with all Cisco software releases and with CiscoWorks router management software. A MIB file contains variables that can be set or read to provide information on network devices and interfaces. The Cisco MIB is a set of variables that are private extensions to the Internet standard MIB II.

Describes how to connect to network hosts using an access server or router. It also describes how to manage and monitor network connections and how to change terminal parameters.

Summarizes the commands in the six command reference publications. For each command, it provides the complete syntax, the purpose, and a description of each keyword and argument in the command syntax. Where possible, it also identifies the default values of keywords and arguments. Intended for network administrators who are familiar with configuration commands but occasionally need to look up command syntax.

Describes how to install and use the Cisco Configuration Builder, a software application that enables users without extensive Cisco router knowledge to configure complex networks. Ships with product.

Documentation Supplements

Provide a summary of new software features and bundled microcode and describe serious caveats in the software. They also include other details, such as the state of the software and memory requirements. The release notes are printed with each Cisco IOS software maintenance release. Ships with product.

Describe updates to the software and new software features since the initial release as well as technical corrections to existing documents. They are printed with Cisco IOS maintenance releases as required. The updates do not appear on Cisco Connection Documentation, Enterprise Series CD as separate documents; their content is incorporated into the appropriate online document.

Managing Your Internetwork

Describes how to install and operate TrueView software on the Catalyst 1600 Token Ring switch. Documentation includes the TrueView Catalyst 1600 Manager User Guide, the TrueView Alert Manager User Guide, and the TrueView Applications Installation and User Guide.

Describes how to install, use, and troubleshoot VLANS.

Describes how to install, use, and troubleshoot Workgroup Director, the Cisco concentrator, switch, and adapter management software.

Troubleshooting Your Internetwork

Provides information about troubleshooting router startup and serial line problems, as well as troubleshooting network connectivity problems for AppleTalk, Banyan VINES, bridging, DECnet, IBM, ISO CLNS, Novell IPX, TCP/IP, WAN, and XNS.

Provides information about using debug commands to troubleshoot your internetwork. The Debug Command Reference is intended for network administrators who already know how to configure a router and are familiar with all relevant network equipment.

Describes system error messages reported by Cisco IOS software. Includes possible causes and recommended actions. The System Error Messages publication is intended for network administrators who are responsible for monitoring and maintaining internetworking equipment.

Ordering Cisco Documentation

fig_4.gif

Documentation for Cisco products is available in two forms: on a CD-ROM called Cisco Connection Documentation, Enterprise Series---the interactive online library of Cisco product information---and printed books. You have the option of subscribing to the documentation CD through a CD-ROM update service. Any additional printed documentation must be ordered separately, at an additional cost (with the exception of installation guides, installation and configuration guides, and user guides, which are shipped with the product). This section contains information about the documentation CD, as well as a complete list of available Cisco printed documentation. Contact Customer Service or use the Express Order Form in the back of this packet to order documentation.

Cisco Systems provides two delivery programs: standard and express. The standard program delivers Cisco documentation on a worldwide basis, and the Cisco Systems Express program delivers documentation to the United States and Canada.

If you have comments on Cisco documentation, please complete the Documentation Comment Card in the middle of this booklet and drop it in the mail.
